As part of this week’s Charity Fraud Awareness Week, the Fundraising Regulator has published a list of questions to help people work out if a charity is genuine or not.

The guide, Six Questions Every Fundraiser Should be Able to Answer to Improve Donor Confidence suggests questions that people can ask a charity they are considering donating to in order to feel confident that their money will go to the right place.

They are:

  • Is the charity you are fundraising for registered?
  • What permissions do you have that allow you to collect in this area?
  • Who do you work for / What proportion of my money goes to the charity?
  • How can I be sure you are who you say you are?
  • Do you support good fundraising practice?
  • Can I think it over?

In addition to the questions, the guide explains why each question is valid and what they should expect to hear in response, as well as what further steps they can take if they want to check any further.

It also states that if an individual is still unhappy with a method of fundraising after having contacted the charity in question directly to complain, they should then contact the Fundraising Regulator complaints team.
